What Is – A Spindle?

A spindle, is a turned, carved or otherwise vertical pillar placed between the handrail and the stair-tread or stringer. Spindles have a variety of purposes, such as supporting the handrail at a suitable height, closing the gaps between posts (newel) and adding decorative features to the staircase.

Spindles come in many different shapes and styles, but they are usually made from metal or timber. The design ranges go from classic, contemporary and traditional. Our machine capabilities allow us to manufacture spindles in large batches or in small bespoke design runs that suit your exact requirements.

Spindles have certain requirements that are needed to be met to pass building regulations. The height of a handrail is required to be at least 900mm from the tread, putting a minimum height restriction on staircase spindles. The gap between spindles must not be greater than 100mm and a spindle must be able to withstand a force of 0.25kN.

Spindles that have been part of a staircase for a considerable amount of time may have become victim to damage or aging. Our services include renovation on existing spindles, our design team are able to replicate existing spindles and produce brand new like for like spindles.

At Precision Timber Handrails we have designed many spindle styles for bespoke and regular installations, we ‘design in’ the correct height and strength. They are all done to the clients requirement and using our skill in knowing how to then manufacture and installation.
