What Is – A Winder

A winder is a tread that is narrower at one end than the other. It is used to turn corners or go around curves.

The treads of these are wider at one end than the other, to accommodate the difference in radii of the inside and outside strings. In circular/spiral stairs all the steps are winders.

A kite winder is described as a triangular step in the angle between transverse wall strings – as can be seen in the video and image below.

Winder treads are used in sequences to go around corners, a typical winder is make up of 3 steps with an inside winder angle of 30 degrees making it a right-angled turn on the staircase bend.
