What Is – A Balustrade? Our Range

In our previous article [click here to view] we covered the background of a Balustrade, and now, using our case studies, you will see balustrades in different forms.

At Precision Timber Handrails we are asked to consult on the design, manufacture and installation of a rail system, or balustrade. It doesn’t matter how many component parts there are, some can have a volute, some a finial, some a wreath and some have none of them. The often all have in common a handrail, a baluster (spindle, banister, iron work or glass sheet) for protection and newel post (when there is a staircase). We are focusing upon the balustrade for staircases, but we can make them for other areas that require the design, manufacture and installation of a balustrade.

What Is A Balustrade? Our work, by Precision Timber Handrails

The function of a balustrade can be to stop people from falling off an edge or staircase, to act as a barrier to property or a cordon. It is a means of self protection and controlling access. It is also a feature of a staircase or ledge, so our design skill ensures each and every installation it totally functional and totally in keeping with the style of the property and staircase.

A baluster, the column part, is now also known as a spindle, picket or banister. Now along with a top rail, they have developed and have more component parts. The total effect when it comes together is the balustrade and when completed it makes up the staircase rail system to complete the staircase barrier. This handrail system is often ornate and a feature piece of a staircase, balcony or other walk-way.

At Precision Timber Handrails we have designed many balustrades for our clients, wooden or mixed materials for installation on stone or timber staircases. We have modern, traditional, ornate or clean simplicity all in our design portfolio and installations, which you can see by clicking here.

Our handrails are made at our factory in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, where our staircase wood-turning business can run your entire project.
