What Is – A Volute?
A volute is a term to describe the part of a handrail which is curved in plan and elevation views. Volutes are used to start a rail system (handrail) and are an element for the bullnose step [see the video for a bullnose step].
The volute ornament was suggested to have been inspired by the curve of a ram’s horns.

Our Wooden Volute Installations
At Precision Timber Handrails we have designed many volutes for clients using both machine and hand tools so we have plain and carved finishes. These are all finished off with smooth round curved edges sitting on top of a range of newels that fit the staircase design we have designed and manufactured for our clients.
Our handrails are made at our factory in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, where our staircase wood-turning business can run your entire project. From precise measurement on site using state of the art measuring equipment to designing it up on our top of the range 3D CAD software. Using sustainable wood sources we are FSC registered and will always advise on ethical environmental sourcing without compromising on the quality or look of the work.
